Friday Night Lights airs on NBC Fridays at 9 PM. This great show is just starting it’s second season. There was concern that the network would not renew it for a second season. Why would such a high quality show not be picked up? People just didn’t get it by looking at the show title.
It’s too bad that this exceptional show has been misconstrued by TV viewers because of it’s title, Friday Night Lights. Many people passed on the show the first season. They thought it was some silly high school football plot only interesting to teens. And it wasn’t on Friday nights which further added to the confusion.
Friday Night Lights is far more. It is fascinating show about life in a small west Texas town. The town’s citizens consider high school football up there with God and country. Some may say these folks need to get a life. But it’s OK and perhaps even valid to value your local school’s football so highly. Many great pro footballers got their start in such a town.
The show was one of the top ten shows of the 2006 season according to Time magazine. The photography and direction moves this fascinating plot along beautifully. The characters are superbly acted by good solid actors such as the star, Kyle Chandler.
Kyle Chandler is the coach Eric Taylor. Kyle played an Emmy-nominated role as a guest in Grey’s Anatomy. He has the right tone for the character of the head coach.
The coach has way too much pressure from everyone in town including the town’s mayor, his best friend and every Tom, Dick and Suzy. They all expect the coach to take his team to the State Championship and to win each and every game. His wife and the football players also have huge pressure and unrealistic expectations on them.
There are many sub-plots that are interesting. The many young actors are very good too. We like Zach Gilford as the replacement quarterback. The mood and tone moves the show along quickly. The viewer wants more and more. Any age from 14 to 84 will enjoy this fine show. We highly recommend it.
