This new 30 minute series on Showtime is titled Californication, starring David Duchovny. Californication airs on Mondays at 10:30 p.m. on Showtime.
We were only able to get through the first 2 1/2 episodes of Californication before we decided this was not a show we could continue to watch or even recommend.
Although we like David Duchovny as an actor, we were very disappointed in his character and the so-called plot line of Californication.
The character Duchovny plays is a Hollywood writer named Hank Moody, Hank is a one hit wonder, whose only successful book was made into a romantic comedy. He is now trying to make it in Hollywood after moving from New York with his family.
Hanks family consists of a girlfriend Karen and their daughter named Becca. Karen and Hank never married. They are now separated and Karen is in a new relationship with an important Hollywood producer.
Hank is struggling and depressed because of the breakup of his family and his lack of success in Hollywood. Becca, the 12-year-old daughter is discovering her sexuality and experimenting as adolescents do.
Hank tries to squash the pain he feels by jumping into bed with any woman, who is willing to have sex with him. This unfortunately has also included a 16-year-old daughter of Karen’s new boyfriend. Hank did not realize that she was this young, but it has caused complications.
The focus of this TV show seems to be Hank having sex with women, and/or watching his agent jerk off in his office with very graphic sound effects. So far, Hank, Karen and all are very uninteresting and unlikable characters.
Interesting plot lines would help this pathetic show. So far all you are left with is watching Hank screwing women. This is neither entertaining nor interesting.
The focus on sex shows a lack of imagination and intelligence on the part of the writers. Series of monotonous sex scenes and uninteresting characters cannot hold our attention past these few episodes.
It is yet another unimaginative show, perhaps written by 25-year-old young men who seem to feel that all an audience wants is sex, sex, sex! We do not feel that this is what most general audiences are looking for in a good TV show.
We notice that successful TV shows have great plot lines and good character development with perhaps a little sex thrown in for color and excitement. By having a show focused mostly on sex scenes is a very narrow focus.
Therefore we cannot recommend Californication as a show we will continue to watch. It may be some young people who are interested in is a lot of sex scenes will enjoy the show.
It may be that Californication tries to portray behind the scenes Hollywood, but there is a far better show that does this namely Entourage on HBO, which we do recommend.
We’re disappointed to see that David Duchovny has chose chosen this after his successful and highly entertaining series X-Files. We doubt very much that this series will be successful and we hope that David can choose a better series for his next show.
