SPACE PATROL NAME THE PLANET CONTEST COMMERCIAL 1953
Here is a montage of three commercials from the 1953 SPACE PATROL television episode, “The Salves of Planet X”, for the “Name the Planet” contest. Easily the most elaborate of early television’s contests, was the SPACE PATROL “Name the Planet Contest”, held between September 19 and November 28, 1953. SPACE PATROL, chronicled the adventures of “Commander Buzz Correy” (Ed Kemmer”) and his aide, “Cadet Happy” (Lyn Osborne), who ventured forth in the sleek rocket battlecruiser, the Terra V, in weekly television and radio far future “missions of interplanetary justice” on behalf of the United Planets located on the man-made planet, Terra. One of the highest rated of the early TV’s juvenuile science-fiction programs, it was the second to reach the small screen, following CAPTAIN VIDEO (which debuted in 1949 on the Dumont network), in 1950 as a daily 15 minute afternoon serial, broadacst live from Hollywood. Followers of the show, were first teased about the contest in the August 29 episode, “The Mystery of Planet X”, which detailed the danger to our solar system posed by the sudden appearance of a massive celestial body, dubbed “Planet X”, five thousand times the size of Earth. Subsequently, it was revealed that the sizeable sphere was under the control of the evil Prince Baccaratti (Bela Kovacs), a power-mad despot out to enslave the universe. “Mystery Coins” (also known as “Space Coins”)were announced as being available in specially marked packages of Chex and Ralston cereals, the show’s sponsor, on the September 12, show. These color plastic discs of various denominations would soon play an important part in the contest to come. The following week, September 19, on the “Hate Machine of Planet X”, episodethe “Name the Planet Contest” was officially announced. Spokesperson Jack Narz, who may best remembered as a prominent game show host embroiled the television quiz show scandals of the 1950s, abnnounced that the contest’s first prize was a forty foot long “rocket clubhouse” — an “exact” replica of Commander Correy’s Terra V spaceship — plus a truck and trailer to move the huge prize and $1,500.00 in cash. Also there were a thousand additional prizes, including Schwinn bicycles and a cornocoupia of Space Patrol toys. All you had to do was think up a name for Planet X! Well, not exactly. The elaborate contest also had elaborate entry rules. First, you had to obtain your multi-fold entry blank from you nearest Weather Bird shoe store, which also helped underwite the contest. Before you could submit your entry, you had to fill the folder’s sixteen (–that’s right sixteen!!–)coin slots with the appropriate color and denomination of space coins. Only one coin was packaged in each box of Rice Chex, Wheat Chex or Ralston (which had the consistency of paste when served. Coins were also given with the purchase of a new pair of Weatherbird Shoes as well. Contestants had to eat a lot of cereal or beg Mom to buy a lot of shoes in order to enter. Once the coin slots was full, the details filled and your name wriiten in the appropriate spot, the unweildly entry blank could then be mailed Space Patrol in St. Louis, Mo. for the judges’ decision. The winning name for the contest, “Cesaria”, was announced on the January 9, 1954 SPACE PATROL episode, “The Space Vault Robbery.” er of the contest, Ricky Walker of Washington, Illionois. He received the rocket clubhouse on January 14, 1954. Two days later, January 16, 1954, his tometown held an official presentation — which was recoerded on film — and named the day as “Ricky Walker Day.” A few years later, Walker’s parents sold the Terra V replica to a traveling carnival for $1,000. The rocket’s last resting place was in Ghent, New York. Allegedly owned by a movie producer who planned to restore the rusting rocket, it was destroyed in the Fall of 1985 due to safety concerns after an accident involing a workman.
